Playing the Demo
The first segment of the game takes place in a simulated space combat between the U.S.S. Enterprise and the U.S.S. Republic. Once the combat begins, type "w" to enable your weapons systems, and "s" to raise your shields. If necessary, you can type "e" to provide emergency power, and "d" will tell Mr. Scott to concentrate repairs on various ship systems. You can also press the Tab key to move the mouse pointer out of the viewscreen to the bridge, where you may click on the various crew members to order them to perform their various functions.
After the combat concludes, you'll be able to play through one room of the first episode, "Demon World." Press the space bar to bring up the interface. You can click on the eyes to look at something, the mouth to speak to someone, the raised hand to use an item, the lowered hand to pick up an item, or the chest to merely walk around. Then you can click on something else to perform the action on that person or object.
For instance, if you wanted to use your stun-phaser on the trees, you would follow these steps: Press the space bar to bring up the interface; click on the raised hand for Use; click on the inventory bag to open the bag; click on the stun-phaser; click on the trees to shoot at them.
Menus
During game play the menu bar is hidden. To view the menu bar, press -P. This will pause the game and show the menu bar. Note that all keyboard equivalent commands are still available even if the menu bar is hidden.
You probably do not need to check the “Quickdraw Compatible” menu option. The game runs much slower if this menu option is checked. It is possible that you'll need to check this menu option if using certain accelerated video cards or if using future Macintosh models that require Quickdraw.
At certain points during the game, “Save Game” is disabled. This will generally be the case during cinematic cuts in space and while dialog boxes are displayed.
If the game is running too slowly on your computer, first uncheck “Smoother Graphics” mode. Next, uncheck “Larger Image”. If you are still having problems, try turning off Music and/or Sound Effects. Music and Sound Effects take some processor time, which may reduce performance on slower machines.
You may also be able to speed up the game a little by turning off File Sharing or other control panels and extensions.
The entire Star Trek CD-ROM package requires just under 13 MB of hard disk space. If you want a smaller installation:
• Delete the file “Intro Movie” from the “Additional Data” folder.
This will save approximately 2.5 MB of hard disk space.
• You can also delete the "Star Trek Audio" file to save another 1.5MB.
If you do this, you'll lose most of the game's sound effects.
